BLOG 'EMAIL' and 'SUBSCRIBE TO' TYPES

BLOG 'EMAIL' and 'SUBSCRIBE TO' BLOG TIPS: Allows your Blog visitors to subscribe to your FeedBurner Feeds (aka. Blog postings) via using one of their personal email addresses or via a Feed Reader (aka. Feed Aggregator). Setting up 'Blog Email' and 'Subscribe to my Blog' has caused a lot of confusion and frustration for many Bloggers, myself included! In fact, many times, even recently, I've noticed that when trying to subscribe to other Blogger's feeds via using one of my personal email addresses that I can't do so because when you click on the 'Subscribe by Email' link on their Blog you get this error message: 'Subscribe to this Feed by Email is NOT Enabled', see 'BLOG EMAIL TYPE 1' and BLOG 'EMAIL' TESTING (the highlighted section below) regarding this issue and how to test this link to insure that it is indeed working.

Firstly, I will discuss all the types of 'Blog Email' and 'Subscribe To' this Blog using my Blog as an example. Secondly, I will cover the 'Email' and 'Subscribe To' types that you can have on your Feed Site page, using my Feed as an example. Remember that you can rearrange any 'Email' or 'Subscribe To' widget or gadget that you place into your Blog's HTML code by going to Design tab>Page Elements> after placing the HTML code, no matter where you currently have them placed in your Blog template.

NOTE: Only 'Blog Email' types are covered here under Blog Site: Tip #8. And I cover 'Subscribe To' this Blog types next under Blog Site: Tip #9 at this link: http://pamelaparr49.blogspot.com/2011/11/blog-site-tip-9.html For FeedBurner 'Email' types and Feedburner 'Subscribe To' go to Blog Site: Tip .#10 by clicking here: http://pamelaparr49.blogspot.com/2011/11/blog-site-tip-10.html

BLOG EMAIL TYPE 1: Subscribe by Email (People Subscribe to your Blog FeedBurner Feeds using their Email). On my Blog the first Email type that you see is: Click Here to Subscribe to COMPUTER REPAIR SERVICE by EMAIL, at upper left, and it allows a person to subscribe to my Blog by using their personal email account. And, these are the steps I followed to incorporate it onto my Blog in order to get it to connent with my FeedBurner Feed Page (because you are subscribing to my Feed is what 'Subscribe to by Email' means).

Step 1: Sign in (login) to FeedBurner>click on your Feed title (aka. Blog's title)>click Publicize>on the left of this page scroll to and click on 'Email Subscriptions'>scroll down to 'Use as a Widget in, click on the (NOTE: click on the 'Read More>>' link below to the left to continue reading this posting):

NOTE: You can also contact me with any of your computer related questions via my cnet.com profile at this link: www.cnet.com/profile/pamjparr/, then just click on: E-mail Pamela j.

dropdown menu arrow and select Blogger>then follow the steps to add this Widget to your Blog.

Step 2: Now you need to copy and paste the HTML code for this widget into your Blog's Template HTML code from the same FeedBurner page that you just installed the Widget from. On this page, just above 'Use as a Widget in' you'll see: 'Preview Subscription Link', highlight and copy the code inside of this box. Sign into your Blog>click on Design at upper right>Click on Edit HTML>click on Expand Widget Templates>paste the HTML code into your Blog template>(Note: I pasted mine just underneath one of the other widget codes I have on my Blog, so paste it under one of the ), scroll down and click on Save Template. (Note: I changed the wording of my 'Subscribe to link' from: 'Subscribe to Computer Repair Service by Email' to 'Click Here to Subscribe to COMPUTER REPAIR SERVICE by EMAIL' right after pasting this code into my Blog's HTML, then I saved the template. Now your new 'Subscribe to link' appears on your Blog page.

BLOG 'EMAIL' TESTING: Now that you've completed Step 1 and 2, when you click on your new 'Subscribe to link' you'll see a form appear with FeedBurner and Email Subscription Request on it. TEST this link to make sure it's working by sending it to one of your email addresses (Note: Don't use your Google Blogger Blog email address, create another one or create or use a current hotmail one for testing, as though you were someone else subscribing to your Blog). Sign into the email address that you just sent to and you should see from: Feedburner Email Subscription, and beside it is 'Activate your email Subscription to: (the title of your Blog is stated here)'. My Blog title is 'Computer Repair Service'. Click on this email and you'll see a link provided to subscribe to your blog, click on it and you should see: Email Subscription Confirmed with your testing email address appearing, and if you do then it means that your 'Subscribe to by Email' link IS working. You can also get further proof that your 'Subscribe to by Email' is working by clicking on it again, on your Blog page, and resubscribing using the same test email address but since you're already subscribed using your test email address you'll see: an X: and your testing email address appears after the X and states that you're already subscribed to the Blog.

BLOG EMAIL TYPE 2: Follow by Email. Scroll down and see mine to your right under my FeedBurner widget (I changed the wording of this gadget from 'Follow by Email' to 'Subscribe by Email to Computer Repair Service'). To add this 'Follow by Email' gadget click on Design at the upper right of your Blog>choose and click on 'Add a Gadget' and select 'Follow by Email' from the list that pops up or type it in to search for it>click on the plus sign to Add it>and you will see that your FeedBurner address is already there (as long as you've already signed up to FeedBurner) to use as the email address that your readers will use to follow (subscribe to) your Blog's feed by entering their own email address into this gadget's box then clicking on Submit>click Save to add this gadget to your Blog. NOTE: Make sure that you sign up to FeedBurner first in order to make sure that this gadget will work. Also, to be sure that it is your FeedBurner's feed address that is appearing in the 'Follow by Email' gadget pop up window you'll see the word 'feedburner' in your email address but you can also check that it is your FeedBurner's address by logging into FeedBurner>click on your FeedBurner title>click on Edit Feed Details at the top>now you'll see your feed address beside 'Feed Address'. It has to be your FeedBurner's feed address that's used NOT your Blog's URL address in 'Follow by Email' or else this gadget will not work.

BLOG EMAIL TYPE 3: Email This (in text link form). At the bottom of every one of my Blog posts (posting) you see 'Email This' beside 'Subscribe to this feed'. Email This allows a person who's reading your blog to send the particular Blog post that they're reading to someone else that they know. And, here are the steps that I followed to incorporate Email This onto all of my Blog postings:

Step 1: Login to FeedBurner>click on your feed's title>click on Optimize>on left of page scroll to and click on FeedFlare>under Feed and Site put a check mark in both boxes beside 'Email This'>scroll to the bottom and click on Save>also at the bottom of this page beside: 'Get the HTML code' to put FeedFlare on your site, click on the drop down menu and select Blogger, then you'll need to select and copy the HTML code for 'Email This' into your Blog's template. Step 2 explains where to paste this code.

Step 2: The form that pops up after you select Blogger drom the drop down menu states that the next step can be confusing and it IS!!! So follow the steps that I provide next. You're told in this pop-up window to copy the HTML code for Template if your Blogger template has the Template tab (or Design tab) then click on Edit HTML>however, the right code to copy for Template (Design) tabs is the code under 'Editing Blogger LAYOUTS' NOT the code for 'Editing Blogger Template' so copy it (the Editing Blogger Layouts html code) then click on Design tab at upper right of your Blog site>click Edit HTML>put a check mark beside Expand Widgets>paste the HTML code under: <div class='post-footer'>.

Now test your new 'Email This' link by clicking on it and in the form that pops up enter one of your email addresses beside 'Your Email Address:', then enter another one of your email addresses beside 'Send To Address:' then click on Send. Log into your email that you sent the test email to and if you see in your inbox your email address that you used to send to your test email and 'sent you a link to content of interest', then you know that this link IS working.

BLOG EMAIL TYPE 4: Email This (with a letter M (email) icon). Is also at the bottom of each of my Blog postings in icon form as part of a widget that was already incorporated into the Blogger template that I'm using by the template designer. It has a letter 'M' on it for mail (email) and when you place your cursor atop of it you see 'Email This'. As you can see, beside the M is B (for Blog This), T for Twitter, F for Facebook. To get it to appear on each of your Blog Posts, at the upper right (on the front (home) page of your Blog) click on Design >click on Settings tab>scroll down to 'Show Email Post links' and select Yes. While still on this page, click on Design>Page Elements>and scroll to the 'Blog Posts' element and click on its Edit link and when its pop-up menu appears scroll down to and place a check mark beside 'Show Share Buttons'.

Now test this 'Email This' link by clicking on the 'M" icon and in the form that pops up you should see your name and your Google email (gmail) address appear automatically. Beside 'Friend's Email Address:' enter one of your own email addresses, click Send. Log into your email that you just sent the test email to and if you see your NAME in your inbox and the name of your Blog site beside it along with the related Blog posting, then you know that this link IS working.

BLOG EMAIL TYPE 5: Email Post (White Envelope Icon). 'Email Post' is identical to 'Email This' under 'Blog Email Type 3. Email This with a letter M (email) icon' above, because the same form pops up for each. At the bottom of all my Blog postings you see a small white envelope. Place your cursor atop of it, and you see 'Email Post', and this allows your blog visitors to send a particular post to someone else, just like 'Email This' does. Although these two email types are similar, you can still opt to incorporate one or both of them onto your blog. To get this White Envelope 'Email Post' icon to appear on every Blog Post, at upper right of the page, (on the front (home) page of your Blog) click on Design>click on Settings tab>scroll down to 'Show Email Post links' and select Yes. While still on this page, click on Design>Page Elements>and scroll to the 'Blog Posts' element and click on its Edit link and when its pop-up menu appears scroll to and place a check mark beside 'Show Email Post Links'.

Now test this 'Email Post (with the White Envelope icon)' link using the same steps used for BLOG EMAIL TYPE 3: Email This (with a letter M (email) icon) by clicking on the white envelope icon and in the form that pops up you should see your name and your Google email (gmail) address appear automatically. Beside 'Friend's Email Address:' enter one of your own email addresses, click Send. Log into your email that you just sent the test email to and if you see your NAME in your inbox and the name of your Blog site beside it along with the related Blog posting, then you know that this link IS working.
